We recently visited Galway to attend a friend's wedding. Whilst there we thoroughly enjoyed the local wild Galway Bay mussels.

They are smaller than the black mussels we have at home, but are incredibly tender and sweet. The popular way to serve them seems to be cooked in white wine and garlic. They are certainly delicious. They are available on most pub menus. Lohan's Pub in Salthill had terrific mussels and a seafood chowder to die for!
A recipe for Galway Mussels
- 1 kg mussels
- ½ onion - finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic - finely diced
- 1 bunch parsley - finely chopped
- 1 glass chardonnay
- 1 cup cream
Clean and rinse the mussels. In a large pot gently sweat off the onions and garlic. Add the chardonnay, mussels and cover for a short time until till they begin to open. Remove the mussels to a serving bowl. Put the cream and parsley in the pot with the wine, onions and garlic and bring it to the boil. Return the mussels to the pot and give it a good shake to incorporate the cream through all the mussels. Cover for just another couple of minutes and serve with a glass of our 2009 "The Senator" Chardonnay!
Galway is a very picturesque place. The quaint streets and shop fronts lend themselves to many photo opportunities.

A favourite shop was Sheridan's Cheesemongers.

The Cheese board for the wedding was purchased from Sheridans.

Sheridan's Cheesemongers is located in Church Lane where they have have the weekend Galway markets. Galway's famous bustling market has been trading in Church lane by St Nicholas' Church in the centre of the city for centuries.
There are stalls selling fresh produce and locally produced crafts and there's a great variety of yummy food available.
