Birdsville is famous for its pub. It actually has two pubs in town - one open and one ruined.

In the outback people are very friendly. The bartender at the Birdsville pub was a very obliging chap. Note the bar snacks menu to his left. When the Chef has nicked off you can order bar snacks which include a 7 course meal – a 6 pack and a meat pie. For lunch we had a pretty decent hamburger featuring channel country organic beef, more beers of course and then on to fly over Lake Eyre.
Photos from airplanes are pretty boring – but this is a sight impossible to see from the ground. This is the Warburton River flowing into Lake Eyre.

After a good scenic flight over Lake Eyre we were a bit thirsty and so decided to land in William Creek for ‘Afternoon tea’.

We were feeling pretty enthusiastic about some exercise. A game of golf was soon dismissed – it looked like a tough sand course and so there wasn’t much else to do but head to the pub for an afternoon session before flying on to Marree.

The Marree hotel is gorgeous, it's a big stone building with grand proportions. The accommodation is pretty basic but comfortable nonetheless. Publican Laurie is a terrific host. The culinary highlight in Marree was the quandong pie for dessert and of course the cold beer.

Our fuel stop on the way home was Broken Hill, where we were able to see the Pro Hart gallery.
