When we established GRAZING in 2003, we made a decision to put only local wines on the wine list. Our vineyard at Tallagandra Lane, Gundaroo was not long planted and we wanted to support the local industry. Our first wine list had 75 local wines.
I was incredibly impressed with the wines from Kyeema from the minute I first tasted them, but it wasn’t just me who was impressed. In 2002, Dr Brian Johnson released a book on the region called ‘Wines of the Canberra District’. In reading the book, it was obvious that Kyeema was the most awarded winery of the region. Trophies and gold medals adorned the Kyeema shiraz and merlot and the winemaker, Andrew McEwin was building a loyal following amongst wine connossieurs.

Andrew use to deliver the wines to GRAZING and stop for a coffee and chat. This somewhat daggy and scruffy looking winemaker was hard not to like. Andrew use to bound into GRAZING with a smile and twinkle in his eye, but he was actually quite shy and very humble. As a wine judge and director of Winewise Andrew has a brilliant palate. His wines are always beautifully balanced, which I think stems from his upbringing close to McLaren Vale, known as the “middle palate of Australia”.
Kyeema reds were our biggest selling reds at the restaurant. I still have to pinch myself that along with Andrew and Marion, we are now owners of this incredible brand.
