My life is busy. Very, very busy – actually most people think I am crazy. I probably am! But I think I am just a person who likes to be busy and challenged.
Mark (aka the vineyard manager) and I, along with Andrew and Marion McEwin, own a small winery; Capital Wines, at Murrumbateman within the Canberra Region.
One of the reasons I am so busy is that apart from nurturing two future winemakers, working full time in our small wine business and keeping a marketing eye on the restaurant, I haven’t yet cut the umbilical cord and let go of my city job.
After 16 years working in a management role for a large Australian company, I am now part time. My job involves a lot of travel and I am still not entirely sure why I keep it. Certainly the additional wage is very handy and the fringe benefits very attractive, but maybe it’s the opportunity to ‘clear my headspace’ that I enjoy. I go to work, away from our small business, where the demands are constant and unending, and this allows me to reset my thoughts. It allows me more energy and focus. It's like rebooting the computer and defragging the hard drive, as it were.
Maybe it’s also the unconscious fear that if I never ever have to get up and put on makeup and high heels again I never will.

Having flown the Sydney coop, we now live in the small village of Gundaroo, just a stone’s throw from ‘The Nation’s Capital’, Canberra. It is here that we are the custodians of the National Trust Royal Hotel, which we purchased in 2003. After a six month restoration on this historic building, we established our restaurant, GRAZING. Now, with GRAZING in the hands of Chef Tom Moore, we are focused on our small winery.
How we escaped from the rat race is a long story, but I hope that you share in our journey as I introduce you to the people we have met along the way and who make our lives and business so interesting.
